Sangrand (Sankranti in Hindi)
- Sangrand (Sankranti) is the first day of a month according to Indian traditional calendar. Note that there are two types of traditional calendars - Solar (based upon Sun) and Lunar (based upon Moon) and Sangrand (Sankranti) is the beginning of new month according to Solar calendar. The day next to Masya or Puranmashi is considered as the first day of month according to Lunar calendar and most of the religious festivals in India are based upon Lunar calendar.
Chet is the first month of the year according to Bikrami Samvat calendar and hence the sangrand of Chet month is considered as the new year day.
So according to desi calendar of 2017, the new year will start on Tuesday, 14th March 2017.
Many readers will say that Vaisakh is the first month of the year and festival of Vaisakhi is the new year day. But actually this festival is related to the harvesting season of wheat crop.

The sangrand of Vaisakh month is celebrated as the festival of Vaisakhi and it is a government holiday in Punjab.

Sangrand in May 2017 is on 14 May (Sunday) and the month of Jeth (ਜੇਠ in Punjabi) will start on this date. Jeth is the third month of the year according to Bikarmi Samvat (Vikram Samvat) year.
Vaisakh or Baisakh, the second month of the year, will end on 13th May. Jeth and Harh are the hottest months in Punjab.

Sankranti in May 2017
The date of Sankranti in the month of May is 14 May (Sunday) and this is known as Vrishabha Sankranti or Jyeshtha Sankranti. The relative position of Sun & Earth is divided into 12 phases (Sign or Rashi) and new month starts when sun enters to a new phase (rashi) and this day is observed as Sankranti.
On 14th May, the sun will enter Taurus sign from the Aries sign. In the Hindu religion, the day of Sankranti is considered good for charitable works (Daan) but all auspicious occassions like marriages are avoided on this day.

Puranmashi in 2017
The night of Full Moon is called as Puranmashi (also Pooranmashi or Punia) in Punjabi and the hindi word for this is Purnima. On this night, moon is visible as full circle and brighter than other days. The puranmashi in April 2017

This will be Chet Purnima as the day falls in Chet month according to the Bikrami Samvat calendar.

Dashami in Year 2017
The tenth day from Masya or Puranmashi is called as Dashami (also Dashmi). The Dashami which is generally observed in temples and gurudwaras is the tenth day from Masya.
