The government released the religion wise population of Punjab and other states in August 2015. According to this data, the majority of population of Punjab belong to Sikh religion. The percentage of Sikh population in Punjab is 57.69% of the total population of the state. The next major religion in Punjab is Hindu religion, which is followed by the 38.49% of the total population. The Sikh and Hindu community forms more than 96% of the total population of state. The total muslim population in Punjab is around 5.35 lakh and the ratio of muslims in the state is only 1.93%. Sikh Population in Punjab

The sikh population in Punjab is 1,60,04,754 (1.60 Crore or 16 Millions) and this is 57.69% of the total population of the state. Sikhism is the majority religion in Punjab and this is the only state in India having majority of population belonging to Sikh community. Hindu Population in Punjab

The total hindu population in Punjab is 1,06,78,138 (1.07 Crore or 10.67 Millions) and the percentage of Hindus in Punjab is 38.49%. Although Hinduism is not a majority religion in Punjab, but Hindus are in majority in most of the cities and towns of the state. The districts adjoining Himachal Pradesh like Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawan Shahr are dominated by Hindus.

Muslim Population in Punjab

The total muslim population in Punjab is 5,35,489 (5.35 Lakh or 535 Thousands) and the percentage of muslims in Punjab is 1.93%. The migrant labourers living in industrial city of Ludhiana forms a large proportion of the muslim population in the state. It is interesting to note that the muslims are in majority in the Malerkotla town, where this religious group constitue around 69% of the total population in the town. Razia Sultana, the current MLA of Malerkotla is a cabinet minister in Punjab government.
