There are total
299 railway stations in Punjab. The first railway line in Punjab was built in 1862 and it connected the two most important cities of Punjab - Amritsar and Lahore (now in Pakistan). Most of railway routes in Punjab were built during the next 50-60 years starting from 1862.
The recent addition to the railway routes in the state is Ludhiana-Chandigarh and Fazilka-Abohar rail link. A district wise list of railway stations in Punjab is given on this page. Note that there are many stations in the list where not even a single train stops.
The state of Punjab comes under the Northern Railway Zone and the stations in the state are part of three railway divisions - Ambala, Firozpur and Delhi.
Largest Railway Station in Punjab
Before we know that which is the largest railway station in Punjab, what is the criteria to decide about largest railway station? If we talk about number of lines originating from a station, then Bathinda is the largest railway station in Punjab. Bathinda is the
biggest railway junction in Punjab and there are 6 broad gauge lines originating from this railway station. This is also amongst one of the biggest railway junctions in India.
If we consider the number of trains passing through a railway station as the criteria for largest railway station, then Ludhiana is the largest railways station of Punjab. In terms of number of trains originating from a station, Amritsar tops the list of all railway stations of Punjab. In terms of passenger earnings, Ludhiana and Amritsar are the only two stations of Punjab which are in the A-1 category.
The railway stations in India are classified into A1, A, B, C categories etc. according to passenger earnings. There are around 400 railway stations listed in A1 and A category in the whole country.
There are total 13 stations of Punjab in this list. Amritsar and Ludhiana are only stations of Punjab in the A-1 category and 11 stations are in the A category list. Interestingly, eight out of these thirteen railway stations are on the Amritsar - New Delhi rail link.
