Hoshiarpur District (ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ)


Hoshiarpur is one of the 22 districts of Punjab. The head quarter of this district is the city of same name, that is Hoshiarpur city. According to population, this is the 7th largest district of Punjab.



History of Hoshiarpur

According to one convention it is believed that it was named after the name of Hoshiar Khan of Bazwara village about 600 years ago. Another convention believe it founded by Hargobind and Ram Chand two ‘Dewans’ of Emperor Tuglak. Some places of this district are said to be linkd to Pandavs. The town Dasua of this district was called ‘Virat Di Nagri’ Its reference can be found in Mahabharat. The District Hoshiarpur came into existence after first Anglo-Sikh war in 1846 when this area went under the British rule.

Geographical position of Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur is a the North Eastern district of Punjab. On its East it has its makes the state boundary with Himachal Pardesh. On the North East it has beautiful Shivalik Hills. Beas river makes its North West boundary and separates it from Himachal Pradesh in the East and from Gurdaspur district in the West. The district headquarter of Hoshiarpur is the city of the same name. It is by rail and road connected to Jalandhar from which it is at a distance of 44 kms. It is 39 kms from Phagwara.

According to 2011 census, the total population of Hoshiarpur district is 1586625. In 2001, the population was 1481292.
