Nawan Shahr is one of the 22 districts of Punjab. The head quarter of this district is the city of same name, that is Nawan Shahr city. The official name of the district is Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, named after the great martyr and freedom figher Bhagat Singh. But it is mostly known with its old name i.e. Nawan Shahr which literally means New City. This is a relatively small district and according to population this is at 20th rank from twenty two districts of Punjab.

According to 2011 census, the total population of Nawan Shahr district is 612310. It was 587468 in 2001. This is the third smallest districts of the state. The only two districts that have population lower than Nawan Shahr are Fatehgarh Sahib and Barnala.
